Edge of the World at dusk. Hegra at first light.
Which escarpment run gets you up there before the sun drops. What a day among the tombs costs. When Al Balad opens its shutters again after the heat. Every tour in Saudi Arabia, reviewed.
The days a Saudi trip gets built around.
A cliff that drops away two hours from the capital, tombs cut into sandstone above the oasis, coral houses leaning over Jeddah’s old lanes, and the red dunes on Riyadh’s eastern edge. Start here and the rest of the itinerary arranges itself.
The Edge of the World: pick the run that fits.

There is no road to the cliff, only graded track, so every operator runs 4x4s and every trip is a convoy. What separates them is the hour they leave Riyadh, whether the bat cave and the camel line are in, and whether you eat up there under the stars or come straight back.

Cliff edge, then dinner in the dark
Out along the Al-Qadiya track mid-afternoon, an hour on the rim while the light goes copper, then a camp fire and a plate of kabsa before the drive home.
What a day out costs in Saudi Arabia.
Every tour on the site, sorted by what it actually costs. The escarpment, the tombs and the dunes all sit lower than most people expect.
Hop-on buses, ziyarat half-days, camel hours and shared desert runs out of Riyadh.
The standard day out: Edge of the World convoys, Hegra entry days, Al Balad walking tours with lunch.

Riyadh is a base camp with a capital attached.
The city itself is Masmak fort, the Diriyah mud-brick quarter and a skyline that keeps growing. Everything else leaves town: the escarpment north-west, the red dunes east, the deer reserve in between. Book the desert days first and fill in the city around them.

Jeddah keeps its old city and its coastline in one day.
Al Balad’s coral houses lean into lanes barely wide enough for two, and the reef starts a short drive up the corniche. Mornings belong to the old town, afternoons to the water, and the evening to the fish grills along the seafront.
All 59 Jeddah tours →The escarpment, the tombs and the red sand.
Deserts and old quarters run the length of the Gulf. The escarpment, the Nabataean tombs at Hegra and the orange sand east of Riyadh belong to this country alone.

The Escarpment
Jebel Fihrayn is the rim of the Tuwaiq escarpment, where the plateau simply stops and the old caravan floor opens out three hundred metres below. There is no barrier, no ticket office and no tarmac for the last stretch, which is why every trip runs in a 4x4 convoy. Go late: the rock turns copper about an hour before sunset.

The Tombs of Hegra
Hegra was the southern city of the Nabataean kingdom, and its tomb facades stand alone in open desert rather than pressed into a gorge. Entry runs on timed permits through the AlUla visitor system, and guides walk you between the outcrops of Qasr al-Farid, Jabal Ithlib and the Diwan.

The Red Sands
The Nafud al-Urayq dunes really are that colour, iron oxide in the grain, and they begin barely an hour from the city ring road. Weekends bring Riyadh families out with tea and shade cloth; operators add quad bikes, dune driving and a camel line to make an afternoon of it.

Madinah, Makkah and the ziyarat routes.
Ziyarat itineraries visit the sites around the two holy cities: the Prophet’s Mosque and its courtyards, Quba, Qiblatain, the field at Uhud and the date farms on the city’s edge. Schedules are built around prayer times, and guides state in advance which sites non-Muslim visitors may enter. Dress requirements apply throughout.

From May to September, plan around the middle of the day.
High summer in Riyadh runs past 45°C and nothing outdoors happens between eleven and four. The country adjusts rather than stops: desert convoys leave in the late afternoon and come back under stars, Al Balad and Diriyah walk properly after sunset, and the Red Sea stays swimmable every month of the year.
